I’d buy the Sony WH-CH720N over the JBL Tune 770NC for weight and the lab record I cite in my CH720N review. The JBL answers with a longer battery claim and Bluetooth 5.3. Nothing on either maker’s page settles noise cancelling, so I don’t call a winner there.

The spec table comes from Sony’s and JBL’s own pages, checked October 19, 2026, and those numbers are claims, not measurements. The sections on comfort, folding, noise cancelling and calls cover how the two compare on your head, where the specs say little.

What the numbers mean for you

Bar chart of claimed battery hours with ANC on and off for the Sony WH-CH720N and JBL Tune 770NC
Battery claims from Sony and JBL · Open full size

The JBL claims 44 hours with ANC on, which is 9 hours more than Sony’s 35. That’s a real gap on paper, but the CH720N already has both of its lab battery runs ahead of Sony’s claim in the tests behind my review. The JBL’s hours are JBL’s claim alone.

Weight is the number you’ll feel. At 192 g against 232 g, the CH720N is the one to pick if you wear headphones for long sessions. JBL charges faster for a full battery, 2 hours against 3.5, while Sony wins the 10-minute top-up with 4.5 hours of playback.

Codecs don’t separate them. Neither lists LDAC. Sony lists SBC and AAC, and JBL doesn’t say.

Which is more comfortable?

The CH720N, for most heads. It’s 40 g lighter, its cups are wider and deep enough that your ears don’t touch the drivers, and it clamps gently, so long sessions stay easy. The top of its headband has only thin padding, though, which you’ll notice in the first few days.

The Tune 770NC clamps harder, and its smaller cups press on your ears. That fit suits smaller heads, including teens, better than big ones. If your ears are large, I’d pick the Sony. The Sony’s headband has metal inside the slider, where the JBL’s band is all plastic.

Which folds and travels better?

The Tune 770NC. Its cups fold inward and also turn flat, so it packs smaller in a bag, and JBL bills it as flat-folding. The CH720N’s cups only swivel flat. Neither ships with a case or pouch, so budget a few dollars for one if you travel.

The JBL also puts every button on the right cup, while Sony splits the controls between both cups. JBL adds TalkThru, which lowers your music and lets voices through for a quick chat, and VoiceAware, which lets you hear your own voice on calls.

Which has better noise cancelling?

It’s close. Side by side in a noisy restaurant, the two block about the same, with a slight edge to the JBL, and the JBL’s Ambient Aware mode sounds more natural than Sony’s ambient mode. JBL calls its system adaptive ANC. The CH720N measured a modest cut on RTINGS’ older test bench, so don’t expect either pair to silence a plane cabin. If noise cancelling matters most, the Soundcore Space Q45 blocks much more.

Which is better for calls?

The CH720N. Both filter traffic and wind well, but your voice comes through more natural on the Sony, while the JBL can sound a little robotic.

Which sounds better?

Taste decides this one. Some listeners prefer the Tune 770NC’s bassier JBL Pure Bass tuning at default settings, and it uses bigger 40 mm drivers. The CH720N sounds a bit bright up top by default, but its five-band EQ and Clear Bass slider in the Sound Connect app fix most of that. Both apps let you build a custom EQ, so set one up before you judge either pair.

Which should you buy?

Buy the CH720N if it’s $90 or less and you care about weight, comfort and calls. Buy the Tune 770NC if you want the longer claimed battery, a pair that folds small and Bluetooth 5.3, and you find it at a price that makes the CH720N’s lead irrelevant. Sony WH-CH720N Review: Noise Cancelling on a Budget

At $90 or less, the Sony WH-CH720N is the light, long-lasting noise cancelling pair I'd buy for commutes and office days. If you fly often, look at a used WH-1000XM4, and only pay the WH-CH730N's $179.99 list price if you need a folding headband.

    Sony CH720N vs Bose QuietComfort

Buy the Sony WH-CH720N at $65 to $90 for commuting, calls and battery life. The Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2023) blocks far more rumble and folds into a case, but its $169 sale ended October 11 and it cost $359 on October 22, 2026, so I'd only buy it if noise cancelling is why you're shopping and it goes back on sale.

  • Comparison

    Soundcore Q20i vs Q30

On paper the Q20i and Q30 are close. The Q30 lists a second call mic and a heavier build, and Soundcore's pages disagree with themselves on both batteries. Decide on street price.

Soundcore Space Q45 Review: Is It Good Value?

Yes, if you buy it renewed for about $100. New US stock is gone, but the Soundcore Space Q45 still has the strongest noise cancelling in the budget class. Above $100, I'd buy a new Soundcore Space 2 instead.
